Miss Sticland said in an interview “I’m such a dork but it’s true”. Dork she may be but Johanna Gene Stickland have been called the face of the future in the fashion industry and will probably become one of Canada’s supermodels.
Lucky for the Second Time
The beautiful 18 year old, Johanna Gene Stickland started her career in the modeling industry in 2006 at the age of 16 when she signed up with Supreme Management –the modeling agency founded by Paul Rowland in the year 2000.
The ethereal beauty was first spotted by a modeling scout at the age of 11 when the little girl was still in primary school. She was later on judged to be too young to enter the world of glitter and glamour. She was later on spotted by the same scout while Miss Stickland was walking down the street. The scout immediately stopped his car and chased her to a local shop.
The young Miss Stickland said in an interview with Vogue that the scout who spotted her twice said “I remember you from when you were 11, and you’re old enough now, so come with me!” Five years after that talk in a local shop in Alberta, Canada, Miss Stickland became one of the most sought after faces in the catwalk.
October 2006 - after Stickland signed with Supreme, she debuted in Paris in the runways for Givenchy, Dries van Noten, Christian Dior and Yohji Yamamoto. She also graced the opening of Ann Demeulemeester’s spring fashion show in Paris.
Gracing the cover of Flare magazine a month later, the beautiful Miss Stickland wowed her gurus and her then growing number of fans.
Johanna Gene started 2007 with a bang when she was featured in WWD along with other models as one of the not so many new faces for the then up and coming fall collection. She later signed a contract with Jil Sander to be the official face of the brand for its spring ad campaign.
By July 2007, the youthful beauty appeared in Harper’s Bazaar’s editorial along with co-models from Supreme. She later appeared in Another Magazine for its fall editorial and signed yet another contract for an ad campaign, this time for Marc Jacobs’ Daisy fragrance advertisements alongside model Irina Kulikova.
Later that same year, Stickland graced the Uniqlo fall catalog.
She joined Premier London in early 2007 as well. Her agencies are Women Management New York, Women Management Milan, Women Management Paris, Premier London, Giovanni Toronto, Giovanni Montreal, Mode Models International Calgary.
The high fashion and beauty brands associated with the young rising star are Betty Jackson, Chaiken, Christian Dior, Chloe, Gharani Strok, Costello Tagliapietra, Givenchy, Haider Ackermann, Jill Sturat, John Galliano, Jil Sander, Marc by marc Jacobs, Marc Jacobs, Peter Jensenm Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, Ports 1961, Monique Lhuillier, Proenza Schouler, Sonia Rykiel, Tuleh, Vera Wang, Sinha-Stanic, Wunderkind, and Yohji Yamamoto.
Getting Personal with Miss Stickland
The dark blonde Canadian stands 6 feet and has piercing blue eyes. She is known for her ethereal beauty in the fashion world but to her friends she is just a regular teenager. She says that her favorite photo shoot ever is with Willy Vanderperre because “the clothes were so cool.”
She lives in New York but chooses to go home to Calgary most of the time. Since she is usually accompanied by dad Eugene and mom Carrie, Johanna does not lose her way into partying. She has her priorities straight and says of her parents that “They’re totally supportive. They know it’s a good opportunity and that it only comes around once in a lifetime.”
Miss Stickland also adds “They know I have my head on straight and won’t do anything bad. I’m a pretty good kid.”
Like any other teenager she is not into serious stuff, when asked in an interview what’s her favorite show that she has done, the teenage beauty said “Chloe definitely! The clothes were less serious and more fun, plus the backstage environment was so different –in a good way! We were all dancing and just having a good time.”
It’s not a sin to have fun and Stickland makes sure she has her share of it even if she works very hard not only with her modeling but also in school. She is finishing school through correspondence and tutorials. She even added that if she wasn’t modeling she would rather be in school chilling with her best friends.
Her top 5 most favorite bands and artists are Nigel Kennedy, MIA, The Blood Brothers, Feist, and Beck. Her top 5 most favorite movies of all time are Amelie, Airplane, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Grease, and The Corpse Bride.
The teenage model makes time for her reading as well; she likes to read Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte and anything that Jose Saramago wrote. She still curls up to those Edgar Allan Poe’s poems prose and stories and still considers herself a dork amidst her success in the fashion world.
Miss Stickland is thankful that she was given an opportunity to enter the fashion world because she gets to see many places around the globe.
And when thirsty she only has two choices of drink –coffee and water.
Johanna also said that the most difficult and most dangerous thing about being a model is “Running around in dangerous heels when it’s freezing in New York during the shows.”
What’s more is that Johanna is loved by the press and as said by a For Sure Couture writer –Johanna is such a sweetheart.
During Stickland’s free time she sings karaoke with roommates Anna Barsukova and Mariya Markina.
Johanna Gene Stickland sure is rising fast from the ranks and maybe in a year or two she will become one of the many supermodels hailing from Canada.
