Early Life and Becoming a Model

Alexandra “Ali” Michael was born on 15 May 1990 in Colleyville Texas.  She lived all of her early life in Colleyville, where she attended Grapevine High School.  However, three years before that, she entered the Fashion!Dallis/Kim Dawson Model Search.  She was only 15 at the time, but she won the contest.  Shortly after, she signed with DNA Models and began her official modelling career.  In 2007, she withdrew from Grapevine High School to pursue her modelling career full time.  At that point, she was one semester short of her high school diploma.  She later completed her diploma at Grapevine in 2008.  She is also represented with the Milan agency Why Not.

Michael’s Work on the Runway

Michael made her runway debut in February of 2007 in New York.  She opened for 3.1 Philip Lim and for Alice Roi.  Later that month, she walked for Marc Jacobs in London, and she later said that Jacobs was her absolute favourite designer.  The next month, Michaels opened the fall Lanvin show in Paris.  Michaels then took time off from the runway, and she would not walk in a show again until February of 2008.  The closed the fall Y & Kei show and also appeared on the runway for Marc Jacobs, 3.1 Philip Lim, and DKNY.  Her next runway appearance wouldn’t be until September of 2008, when she opened the spring show for Louise Golden in London.  She also walked for Fendi, Balenciaga, Burberry, Karl Legerfield, and Christian Dior in shows in Paris and Milan.  Following that show, Michael would make very few runway appearances.  In fact, she was noticeably absent from Fashion Week events in London, New York, Milan, and Paris.

Notable Print and Photography Campaigns

Since beginning her modelling career, Michael has appeared in a number of different publications.  She has appeared in W, Harper’s Bizarre, Teen Vogue, Vogue, Italian Vogue, Russian Vogue, Spur magazine, Lula, Numero, Italian Flair, French Mixte, and Wallpaper.  She has also been featured in the French Vogue calendar in 2009.  In addition to her magazine appearances, Michael has worked as a model for Gianfranco Ferre, been a face for Sportmax, appeared in ads for Anna Sui and Lord & Taylor, and worked as the face of Coach.

Weight Controversy

In February of 2008, Michael was told to leave the Paris Fashion Week event because of the size of her legs.  During this time, Michael was in the process of recovering from an eating disorder, and she had recently gained five pounds.  Her expulsion garnered media attention, and she went on to be the subject of an article in The Wall Street Journal.  She also appeared on the Today Show to talk about how models are under pressure to remain thin and how this pressure caused her to develop an eating disorder.  This appearance made Michael into a role model for many young women with eating disorders, and she has consistently spoken out about the modelling world’s focus on weight.

Personal Life

Since 2004, Michael has dated David Broderick, guitarist of the band Kingfish.  Her friends include fellow model Ali Stephens, Jenny Sweeney, Laragh McCann, Skye Stracke, and Tara Gill.  She enjoys riding horses, listening to music, and studying psychology.  She currently lives in New York.
