Take a Trip Down Memory Laine
Amanda is from a small town in Ontario, Canada. She was just a normal teenager in her small hometown of Orillia, more involved in school and sports than in any fashion related activity. Having a fantastic bone structure, impeccable posture and legs that go on for miles, she was always urged by classmates and friends to be a model. She would just go, Yeah, right and go on kicking soccer balls, hitting hockey pucks, hurling lacrosse balls or skiing down slopes.
Finally, she was, “Oh, what the heck, let’s give modeling a try.” The then 15-year old discovered the V/A magazine online contest and submitted her application through the internet. Not surprisingly, she got to the top 5 and flew to New York for an insane week of interviews, photo shoots and casting rehearsals. The contest judges had keen eyes, though. V magazine editor-in-chief Stephan Gan, Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa and Miu Miu casting director Russel Marsh saw a huge potential and a brilliant future in modeling for Amanda Laine and declared her the grand prize champion.
The ticket to her modeling career has just been signed, sealed and delivered.
The Journey to Fame
She was eager to work right away. Julie Anne Quay, V executive editor and contest judge, recalls she was catwalk-ready when she arrived in New York. She had come armed with a full runway walk practiced by seven years of ballet classes and athletic activities.
In Milan, she was nervously surprised but at the same time elated when she was put in the line-up for Prada’s Fall 2008 collection just an hour and a half before the show began. She had no idea that she would be in it but, she did it like a seasoned pro. During an interview, she credits the Prada stint for opening the door to her Paris gig. Laine also modeled for Marni, a high profile show, during the Milan Fashion Week. These got her the recognition she deserved.
In the mecca of the fashion world, Paris, she opened for Alexander McQueen and Miu Miu and closed the fall show of Louis Vuitton. She also became the face of Balenciaga in the fall/winter 2008 collection. After this, it’s time for the Big Apple! It seems too much for a girl of 16 to be noticed by these big names around the world and until now, she still fondly recalls the memory with a smile.
In that same month of February, Model.com and Style.com came out with articles featuring Laine as one of the Top Ten Newcomer of the year. From there, she kept getting better and better.
With her thick, attention-grabbing eyebrows framing her steamy brown eyes, Laine is also a favorite for fashion editorials. In May, she appeared in Interview and V. In July, V magazine gave her another editorial and featured her success in the modeling arena. The following months were a whirlwind. She opened several spring shows in New York, London and Milan for Jeremy Laing, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, Rebecca Taylor, Vera Wang, Paul Smith, Luella, and Burberry and closed the spring Jeremy Laing, Dries van Noten and Lanvin spring shows in New York and Paris.
Laine went to more castings and was booked for more shows. Her face figured prominently in plenty of editorials, photographed by top lens men in a thousand and one ways. She has graced the glossies including Numero, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and W.
A Dream Coming True
In her personal statement for the V Supreme model search, she said the chance to travel the world, meeting different cultures and creative, artistic people will complete her dream of being a model. Now she has reached that dream, perhaps even more than she bargained for.
She is a supermodel through and through. It is so tiring, Laine says, but she appreciates all that has happened to her so far. Though it has really been stressful, it was rewarding in the end. She considers herself lucky to have experienced so much in so little time.
She’s trying to do everything she can now, going with the flow and enjoying everything while it’s still here because she understands that she’s not going to do this forever. This captivating being has dreams of becoming a teacher of science or math. And why not? She’s got a good head on her shoulders. Maybe her students will study more than the day’s lessons and learn how dedication and determination can get you anywhere you want to be.
Meanwhile, she tries to stay normal and grounded whenever her hectic schedule allows it by spending time with family and friends who have been supportive throughout. Mom and Dad accompany her in her travels and her classmates follow her progress on Google.
She was born on February 12, 1991. She is an Aquarian.
