Coco Rocha started rocking the fashion industry when she was spotted by a scout in a dancing competition. After this speedy discovery was her speedy climb to the runway working for high fashion houses. She met with renowned photographer Steven Meisel after her being seen in an Irish dancing competition. This meeting with Steven Meisel lead to her rise as one of the most beautiful talents in the industry.

She posed for Vogue Italia and quickly joined other more senior models on the runways for Prada, Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, D&G, Anna Sui, Balenciaga and Chanel rocking the fashion industry with a firestorm. She was booked to open and close the Fall 2007 collection for the Jean Paul Gaultier show by dancing an Irish dance on the runway –something never done before.

The fashion world was immediately impressed with her ability to capture and get the attention of editors and writers who wrote about her. This ability is said to be attributed to her talent as a dancer.

Humble Beginnings

The beautiful Coco Rocha was born in Toronto but soon moved to British Columbia when she was younger. Her mother Juanita Rocha a flight attendant and her father whom she lovingly calls Coco Pop is a ticket manager in an airline. She has one brother named David and a sister named Lynsey. Coco is of Russian, Welsh and Irish decent –which explains the Irish dancing on the runway. As we all now know, Coco Rocha was discovered in one of the Irish dance competitions held in her hometown at the age of 14. She was enrolled in Dixon Elementary School at the time and later on transferred to Tomekichi Homma Elementary. In secondary, her parents decided to enroll Rocha in Hugh McRoberts. By 2002, Coco Rocha was approached by an agent in the name of Charles Stuart to consider modeling. The beautiful, young lady never thought of modeling as a career before but she eventually said yes and modeled for fashion houses while cramming for her exams in school.
Oh So Coco

One thing that separates Coco Rocha from other models is her personality. She was one of the very few who have spoken against eating disorders in the fashion world. She said in one of her interviews that she knows how hard it is to be a model and how cruel the fashion industry is. That never stopped her from binging though because she loves to eat and later on gained ten pounds –something that the industry frowned upon. She emailed Associated Press at the time telling her story and what the fashion gurus has said. In her email she wrote “I’ll never forget the piece of advice I got from people in the industry when they saw my new body…They said “You need to lose more weight. The look this year is anorexia. We don’t want you to be anorexic but that’s what we want you to look like.”

Indeed Coco is an opinionated young lady who unlike her peers considers eating disorders as a sickness not as a way to lose weight. Coco is a very down to earth girl, she plays touch football with her friends and just recently, she posted in her blog that she is taking up hip hop classes. Yes, she is taking up dancing once again but she made it clear in her message to Jean Paul Gaultier that she is not ready to hip hop her way into the runway in the very near future.
Coco Rocha is not just some pretty face, she is a fun person and has a lot of thoughts to say and share, in her blog post she said “So I've been hearing of this twitter and have no clue what it is. Then I find out that I'm supposedly a member and have been posting for quite some time. It's funny to me how many people pretend to be someone they are not. For those who think they are friends with the real Caroline Trentini on My Space or the real Behati Prinsloo on Facebook you might have been tricked. As for me I don't have a myspace account or a Twitter account. The only way to find out what I'm doing is through my blog and Facebook. So those who have me as a friend on My Space so sorry but it’s just some impersonator trying to be me. That goes for a lot of models out there.”

The Rocking Career

Coco Rocha started her modeling career in the year 2004. She signed up with Supreme, New York.  By 2006, she was featured with famous models Amanda Moore and Gemma Ward in an editorial The said editorial gave her career a hell of a headstart. She landed a cover for Vogue Italia in its February 2006 issue. A week later after shooting for Vogue Italia, she walked the runway for the Spring and Summer collection in New York runways for different high fashion houses such as Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui. One of the stories about Coco Rocha is when she was modeling for Anna Sui, supermodel Naomi Campbell told her that she was Campbell’s new favorite –something that other models would have killed for.

When the New York Fashion Week was over, she flew to the Mecca of the fashion industry –Paris for the Paris Fashion Week. She walked the runways for Christian Lacroix, Stella McCartney, Emmanuel Ungaro and Louis Vuitton. Her supermodel status started when she danced that Irish dance on the runway. By May of 2007, Coco appeared in the issue of Vogue with other models Sasha Pivovarova, Jessica Stam, Caroline Trentini, Iman, Doutzen Kroes, Raquel Zimmerman, Agyness Deyn, Hilary Rhoda and Lildy Donaldson. The group was hailed as the new supermodels.
The young supermodel has graced the covers of many of the top fashion magazines in the world including Flare, Vogue, Numero, French, W, Dazed and Confused, Time Style & Design, Fashion among others.
Indeed, anyone will always go loco for the dazzling Coco.
